The PCV / PSV licence for Category D drivers shall simply be referred to as the PCV licence throughout this article to avoid any further ambiguity. You will be aware that “PCV” always refers to drivers in this fashion. Let’s now talk about the fundamentals of the professional PCV licence.

There are four “flavours” of the PCV licence, which is a Category D licence:

  • Minibuses with a seating capacity of nine to sixteen people fall under Category D1 of licences. It permits pulling a trailer weighing up to 750 kg at once.
  • Category D1+E – This licence also applies to minibuses with a maximum seating capacity of 16 people, but it also allows trailers weighing more than 750 kg. The trailer’s weight cannot be greater than the unladen weight of the towing minibus, and the combined weight of the tow vehicle and trailer cannot be more than 12 tonnes.
  • With a Category D licence, you can operate a bus with a seating capacity of more than eight people and a trailer weighing up to 750 kilogrammes.
  • You can operate almost any coach or bus in the UK with a Category D+E licence. Additionally, you can pull a trailer weighing more than 750 kg at once.

The following are some additional details you should be aware of:

Theory Test: The theory test consists of two sections: danger avoidance and multiple-choice questions. To pass, you must correctly answer 67 of the second part’s questions and 80% of the first section’s questions. Both parts must be passed within two years of one another for them to remain valid.

Case Studies: To satisfy the initial CPC requirements, a new test called the case studies test is required. You will be given a CPC card as proof that you comply once you pass this test and eventually receive your commercial driver’s licence.

Final Test: At an authorised testing site, the driving proficiency and practical demonstration tests are typically administered concurrently. You must pass these two tests to obtain your PCV licence.
